A Clinical Study of Hemorrhoids

Abstract
This report is a clinical analysis of 395 patients with hemorrhoids who were admitted and treated at the department of Surgery of Dae-Han Hospital for the past 4 years from March 1987 to February 1991.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1) Of 664 cases of anal disorders, the patients of hemorrhoid were 395 cases(59.5%).
2) The sex ratio of male to female was 2.6 : 1 and the majority of patients were in the 2rd to 5th decade of life(87.1%).
3) The duration from the onset of symptoms to admission was less than 3 years in 348 patients(88.1%).
4) The nature of hemorrhoid was classified with 3 types: internal in 102(25.9%), external in 132(33.4%), and mixed type in 161 patients(40.7%).
5) The associated anal diseases with hemorrhoid were anal fistula(5.3%), anal fissure(5.1%), and anal polyp(3.3%) in order of frequency.
6) The frequent symptoms were anal bleeding(85.6%), protruding mass(84.1%), and anal pain(80.0%).
7) The main piles on hemorrnoid were located on the right posterior(27.4%), right anterior (26.2%), and left posterior side(16.9%) of the anal cannal.
8) Operative methods commonly used were St.Mark's procedure in 238 patients(60.3%) and modified Nesselrod's hemorrhoidectomy in 145 patients(36.7%).
9) The postoperative complications were noted in 17 patients(4.3%); primary and secondary hemorrhage in 11 cases(2.8%), skin tag in 5 cases(1.3%), and anal stenosis in 1 case(0.2%).
